State of Decay 3 Playtest: Alpha and Closed Beta
Sign-ups open · closed beta planned before the end of 2026
The only way to play State of Decay 3 before its 2027 launch is the official playtest. Registration is free at playtest.stateofdecay.com and has been open since April 3, 2026. Players are invited in waves: a deliberately small alpha started in May 2026, a second alpha followed the June showcase, and closed beta playtests are planned before the end of 2026 with more players and more platforms.
Signing up puts you on a waitlist, not into the game. Invites arrive by email, and anyone who registered during the alpha period stays on the list for the beta.
How to sign up
The process takes a couple of minutes and does not ask for payment. The portal runs on Firstlook.gg, a playtest service used by game studios, so expect an account step there.
- Open the playtest portal
Go to playtest.stateofdecay.com and choose to join the waitlist. Players who already registered use the log-in option instead of signing up again. - Create your Firstlook account
Register with an email address you check. That address is where an invite will land, so a throwaway inbox can cost you a wave. - Wait for an email invite
Invites go out in waves. When yours arrives, continue from the link in the email; that link, not the waitlist page, is what grants access to a test build. - Stay registered for the beta
Alpha-period sign-ups carry over to later playtests, so there is no need to register twice when the closed beta begins.

The official State of Decay Discord also posts playtest news and has a dedicated channel for playtest sign-ups. Joining the server does not replace the portal registration.
Playtest phases so far
Six stages run from the first sign-ups to launch. The early stages have firm dates, while the closed beta and launch only have a target window.

No invite is guaranteed in any wave. State of Decay 2's core audience went first, and newcomers follow as the lists grow.
What alpha testers played
The alpha build already covers the core loop: scavenging, fighting, building up a settlement and pushing back the plague. Its standout improvements are fights against several freaks at once, the improved lighting, sound effects, weather and visuals, a much wider choice of clothing plus glasses and beards, and movement that feels smoother and more reactive than in State of Decay 2.

Some alpha players logged about 90 hours in a single week, which tells you how much of the game is already playable. By August 2026 the build was already more stable than State of Decay 2 was at its own launch, and driving felt better too.
The point of these waves is stress-testing. Untethered multiplayer, where four players can be anywhere on the biggest map in the series, needs many players at once to break it before launch.
The Player Council
Alongside the public waitlist sits a Player Council: a group of committed fans, content creators and community moderators who have advised the studio on builds for about a year. Their feedback reflects a wider shift in the community, as many State of Decay 2 players who only ever played alone now want the untethered shared world.

Community event recap
On June 5, 2026 the council spent a weekend at Undead Labs in Seattle with gameplay and feedback sessions, then watched the Xbox Games Showcase reveal together two days later at a viewing party.
Council seats are not something you apply for on the playtest portal; the regular waitlist is the route for everyone else.
Platforms and what an invite gives you
Which platform each wave uses has not been confirmed for every phase, but the first closed-test invites are expected to be PC-only, with Xbox joining in later phases. The game itself is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5, and more platforms join as testing expands, so console players should keep their registration active rather than waiting for a separate console sign-up.
An invite gives you access to a test build, not the final game, and features can still change before release: the trait names, facility lists and vehicle upgrades known today all come from that early version.
Feedback is the price of admission. Alpha reports have already shaped combat, movement and cosmetics, and the closed beta exists to test the shared world at scale before the 2027 release. Console players waiting for their turn should follow the official Discord, the quickest place to hear when Xbox or PlayStation invites begin.
