Sequel comparison
State of Decay 3 vs State of Decay 2
13 changes compared · 6 expanded, 4 reworked, 1 refined, 1 new, 1 pending
State of Decay 3 keeps the series' foundations, a community of survivors, permadeath and a plague to push back, but changes almost every system around them. Melee gains a second attack and a dodge, the map grows to about four times one State of Decay 2 map, a community can hold three settlements, and co-op becomes an untethered shared world. Plague Hearts grow into Plague Nests, Bloaters burn instead of gassing, weapons are rebuilt from parts, and negative traits can finally improve.
Thirteen changes stand out so far: six systems expand, four are reworked, one is refined, one is entirely new, and Steam Deck support is still pending.

Combat and weapons
The most immediate change is in your hands. State of Decay 2 gave melee a single attack button; the sequel adds a quick attack, a power attack and a dodge, and delivers more reactive hits with more visceral dismemberment. Aiming and weapon switching also feel tighter than before, and you can target limbs to slow zombies down, which matters more now that fresh zombies move faster than old ones.
Weapons tell the story of the years in between. The golf club, State of Decay 2's favourite finisher, is gone because every club in the world is now bent, and store-bought machetes have shattered. Instead you find altered gear, such as serrated machetes and rebar-backed ones that dismember better at a higher stamina cost, and you assemble more of your arsenal from components, including crafted crossbows and homemade explosives like the boom box bomb.
World, bases and co-op
State of Decay 2 split its world into separate maps. State of Decay 3 offers one playable space about four times the size of any of them, and all of it is open from the start. More ground means more driving, which already took 20 to 30 percent of State of Decay 2 playtime, so vehicles now have distinct roles: a fast sedan, an off-road SUV and a fuel-hungry cargo van.
An abandoned gas station burns at night under a collapsing canopy.
Base building scales up too. Instead of one home base, a community runs up to three settlements that pool resources and specialise, with perks carried over from each site's former life. Co-op is the deepest rework: up to four players share one untethered world, can split up across the map, and can keep playing the same save while its owner is offline.
The plague and its freaks
State of Decay 2's Plague Hearts, made dynamic by the Heart Attack update, become the nodes of a much larger structure. Plague Nests sit behind networks of hearts and linked sites four to six times bigger than an old heart, roll personas that change how they spread, grow with your community and come back after you destroy them.
Years after State of Decay 2, the zombies look far more decayed.
The enemy lineup is the same in name but sharper in practice. Zombies now differ by age, with slow desiccated ones, quicker fresh ones and armored ones, and the freaks were reworked. The Bloater shows the change best: in State of Decay 2 it burst into a toxic gas cloud that lingered for about 30 seconds and could cause Black Fever, while in the sequel it spews bile that a Molotov sets ablaze.
Survivors and wardrobe
Permadeath stays exactly as strict as before, but survivors themselves evolve. In State of Decay 2 a trait was permanent; in State of Decay 3 negative traits improve through related tasks, such as fighting under pressure, although they never disappear entirely. Survivors are assembled procedurally from names, backgrounds, voices and traits, and their settlement skills, like electrician or green thumb, shape what each base produces.
The wardrobe grew because players used it. About 30 percent of State of Decay 2's daily players restyled survivors in the closet, so the sequel adds a wider clothing range plus glasses and beards, and plans skins for characters, backpacks and vehicles. Losing a long-time survivor now also leaves a mark through a wall of remembrance and new narrative systems.
Platforms and Steam Deck
State of Decay 2 stayed in the Microsoft family: Xbox and PC, with the Juggernaut Edition on Steam since March 13, 2020. State of Decay 3 adds Xbox Cloud and PlayStation 5, making it the first game in the series on a PlayStation console, and it launches day one on Game Pass.
Handheld PC players have one open question. State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition is rated Playable on Steam Deck and has 153 Steam achievements; the sequel has neither a Deck rating nor a public achievement list before launch. Both should appear as release approaches, so wait for the Deck rating before buying the game to play on one.
