Enemy roster
State of Decay 3 Zombie Types and Freaks
7 confirmed enemy types · no zombie animals
State of Decay 3 keeps State of Decay 2's enemy lineup but gives every type a sharper job. Standard zombies now split into old desiccated shamblers, faster fresh ones and armored ones, and four freaks return with new looks and behaviours: the Bloater, Feral, Screamer and Juggernaut. They are built to play off each other, so a single freak changes how a fight with a crowd goes.
Seven enemy types are confirmed so far, and none of them is an animal. Fire is the most reliable answer across the roster, from Bloater bile to the Juggernaut, while limb hits and a dodge keep the faster zombies from swarming you.

About ten feet tall, the biggest in the series; arrives as Plague Heart reinforcements.
Fighting a Bloater: bile and fire
The Bloater is the clearest example of how the freaks were reworked. Instead of bursting into a poison cloud when it dies, it spews bile that pools on the ground. Throw a Molotov into that bile and it catches fire, and the flames spread to every zombie standing in it. The result is a chain reaction that turns a dangerous freak into a tool you can use against the crowd around it.
The same fire does not care whose side you are on. Bile under your own feet, or under a friend's in co-op, becomes a trap the moment someone throws a bottle, so check positions before lighting it.
In State of Decay 2, a dying Bloater released a toxic gas cloud that lingered for about 30 seconds, drained health and stamina, and could infect survivors with Black Fever. Bloaters often lay in roads like landmines. That gas-cloud behaviour belongs to the previous game; the sequel's version is built around bile and fire.
Old, fresh and armored zombies
Years have passed since State of Decay 2, and the zombies show it. Ones infected long ago are dry, eroded and slow; they shamble rather than run. Recently turned zombies are less decayed and noticeably faster. The split means a single crowd mixes speeds, which makes it harder to judge how much time you have before the group reaches you.
Armored zombies add a third behaviour. They play differently again, especially when you are outnumbered, so they are the ones to watch when a fight turns into a scramble. Read a crowd before you commit: spot the quick movers first, because they decide how much time you have to swing, reload or back away.
These distinctions also change how you use the new melee inputs. Quick attacks suit slow shamblers, while a power attack or a dodge buys space when a fresh zombie rushes in. Hits to the limbs slow zombies down as well, which helps against the faster ones.
When freaks team up
The Juggernaut, Feral, Bloater and Screamer are designed to play off each other when several of them turn up in the same fight. A Bloater's bile can become a firebreak, a Screamer arrives with the horde close behind, and a Feral is one more freak to track in the same encounter.
The Juggernaut is the heaviest of them. At about ten feet tall it towers over every earlier State of Decay enemy, and it shows up as reinforcements when you threaten a Plague Heart. Plan raids on infestations knowing a Juggernaut may join halfway through.
Mixed fights are where the new tools pay off: fire for clustered enemies, explosives for crowds, and a dodge to get out from under a freak's attack. Fire works across the roster, from a Bloater's burning bile to Molotovs thrown at a Juggernaut in a swamp, so a few bottles belong in every survivor's pack.
No zombie animals
The 2020 announcement trailer showed an infected deer, and many players expected zombie animals. They are not in the game: every infected enemy you meet is human, from the slowest shambler to the Juggernaut.
The deer came from a pre-rendered concept trailer made with Blur Studio when only four or five people worked on the project and the game existed mostly as a design document. Everything shown since 2024 comes from the actual game, starting with the in-engine trailer from that year's Xbox Games Showcase.
So the enemies to prepare for are the three zombie types (desiccated, fresh and armored) and the four freaks (Bloater, Feral, Screamer and Juggernaut), inside a plague that keeps changing shape through Plague Nests and their personas. To see what the game actually looks like, skip the 2020 video and watch the 2026 gameplay reveal, which shows the real enemies, weapons and places in motion.
Developer deep dive
The official Xbox podcast recorded at Undead Labs after the 2026 showcase is the longest look at the sequel's enemies. Studio head Philip Holt and Wayne Laybourn explain the Bloater's bile and fire, the split between slow and fresh zombies, and how the Juggernaut, Feral, Bloater and Screamer work together, alongside a tour of the locations seen in the trailer.

The episode also covers the Plague Nest network, vehicles and the clothing system, so it is the best single watch if you want the developers' own explanation of how the systems connect. It runs just under forty minutes.
Watch it with the gameplay reveal open in another tab: the location tour covers the chemical factory with its red plume, Windy City, the towns of Caroline and Wyatt, and the Juno gas station, so you can match each place to the footage.
